Good stuff. A few places we've learned we can dine out:

- Chipotle: Burrito BASKET, black beans, fajita veggies (onions and peppers), all of the salsas, guacamole, and lettuce.

- Jimmy John's: #6 Vegetarian "Unwich," hold the cheese and mayo. If you're really a purist, you might try to find out if the avocado spread is organic/vegan. I didn't care to do that much research :P

- Subway: Build-a-salad.

And... we found one frozen dinner at Meijer!!! Amy's Indian Vegetable Korma. All the ingredients are organic and it complies with the Daniel Fast guidelines :)

Great thoughts on prayer being married to fasting...
Luke talks all the time about needing to adopt the spiritual disciplines of Jesus...and perhaps that's part of the key following his life and his commands.

My wife and I had the privilege of fasting as well and had a great experience with it.
I think one of the things the fast did for me was address the broader issue of denying yourself, something me and my culture aren't big fans of. :o)

This fast was a great excuse to explore some foods from other cultures. Thanks to my wife's knowledge of middle eastern cuisine, we got to experiment with things like hummus and falafel (thanks chick peas!).

Awesome stuff Steve. That's funny you were talking about it. Man, I LOVE how you're talking to your kids about this. I would have loved to be there for that convo. I think that discipling our kids is one of the lost skills in Christian circles. Good point too about not going around telling people about it, although I've found that it's just as easy to get hung up about worrying that people DO know. I know that I didn't start trying to learn about fasting until I got past the fact that some folks will have to know and that's ok.

Luke,

Was talking to my teens about fasting this weekend actually. We have quite a few Catholic and Greek Orthodox friends and one thing that is bugging me is the legalism that pervades fasting. I too grew up in evangelical circles and because legalism was such a great problem in the 60'-90's it really bugs me.

Your point though that we are taught in scripture to fast, and to insert prayer "and" fasting as opposed to just eschewing certain foods is well taken. With my kids I think we ended up in a more personal and private position, one that stays away from the pretentiousness of telling all your pals you're fasting, and also stays away from the controlling nature of others telling you what you will skip in favor of a rule.

Now for the personal application, as all too often we land in a position where it's time to try out our new found philosophies and see if that's really where God wants us to be or just yet another opinion of man.

I didn't know that they were such an aggressive bird. My Hyde Park friends just said that local residents had a few as pets and then decided to just let them go. Who knows, right? Too bad those birds don't bring warm weather and palm trees with them :).
